A renamed farm town now in the path of central-Indiana storms
The area that became Avon changed names four times — Hampton, White Lick, Smootsdell, New Philadelphia, then Avon — while it was still mostly agricultural, and it wasn't until incorporation in 1995 that Avon's Hendricks County subdivisions took their current form. Nearly all of that housing sits within the same regional storm corridor responsible for 18 confirmed tornadoes statewide on April 2, 2025.
Older farm properties face different storm risk than new subdivisions
The oldest agricultural-era properties near Avon's original Washington Township settlement pattern have older roofing and drainage details than the fast-growing subdivisions around them, which changes how quickly wind-driven rain or hail damage turns into interior water intrusion.
